The Paço da Ribafria, commissioned by Gaspar Gonçalves (1502–1562) and completed in 1534 following the design of master builder Pêro Pexão, is one of the most significant examples of Renaissance architecture in Sintra. Its refined forms, constructive precision, and integration within the landscape reflect the emergence of Renaissance culture in the region, shaped by humanist ideas and renewed architectural practices.
Over more than four centuries, the estate underwent notable transformations, including interventions after the 1755 earthquake, mirroring Sintra’s political, social, and territorial evolution. In the 20th century, restoration efforts helped preserve its architectural and landscape identity. Since 2025, it has been part of the Fundação Cultursintra FP, which is leading its requalification, museographic development, and opening to the public, ensuring the historical continuity of this emblematic manor estate in Sintra.
